Art & Antiques

For the Collectors and Connoisseurs In You

This is a harder review to write since this magazine is different than others, in addition, I am a collector of fine arts therefore leaving room for biases, so I will try to stay away from making any suggestions until I have given the facts and then I will give my view on how good this magazine is. This review is based on previous experience and prior subscription (Based of the April 2001 issue).

The Cover

Like most high in specialized magazines that already have customers and their little niche they seem to stay away from the more information the better. It has one topic on the cover. It has a rather large photograph of Tony Bennett with a paintbrush and stand, and a canvas that has already been painted on. With the title subbed behind Tony?s head it draws us in to this smiling face of this gentleman and then drops your eyes to the text that has been overlaid on his image. It reads, ?Tony Bennett, Paints the town, 4 rising design stairs,? a very colorful cover design with vivid colors and great flow, excellent!

The Contents

The table of contents is buried on page 14 and 16, very far away and would normally rate low. However, with the 13 pages beforehand only one does not pertain to the actual purpose of the magazine. I subscribe to this magazine to find information, latest styles, and places to find these items. Out of 13 pages only one does not interest me, it is a car advertisement. Therefore, what would normally become a hindrance in the normal media is well placed in this publication. On the first table of contents page it has three of its main topics.

___1 (Page 59) Rising Design Stars
___2 (Page 68) Master of Arts
___3 (Page 76) Cool Swedish Style

We then flip the page and find a detailed list of everything in the issue. I think it is great how they did this design, first time buyers may be distraught but after a quick read and flip through should be thoroughly edified and smarter for having read it.

More of What You Are Looking For

The glossy pages show its value and the price reflects this. The pictures are exquisite and well placed. The design templates are well thought out, marketing and advertising worked well together and found how to direct what is needed where and when. The articles are well written along with straightforward titles.

In the End

If I were a non-collector with little knowledge of the Arts the glossy pages would entice me, splendid pictures capture me. Once I begin to look for the information and contents I would become distraught for I would be bewildered just trying to find the articles. However, I still rate this high, for those of you looking for a magazine of fine arts and antiques this is the best I have come across in all areas. You may get lost if ignorance stares you in the face, but if you endure you will find the priceless information and see why I feel this is an excellent magazine that needs more ranting and raving about. Get a copy from the store, find the table of contents and read the articles, once done flip through the countless pictures and ads. I am sure will you find it splendid with many sites and numbers to call when you see something you become interested in.

Great Magazine!!!

Art & Antiques is a wonderful magazine for everyone. It has thorough information on particular antiques and artists. It warns of reproductions being made, so you are a better consumer. I can't wait to read each new edition. Just when you think your getting to know all about antiques , they surprise you with something you didn't know was made or didn't know was collectible or valuable. For the expert or novice, this magazine will inform you and keep you up to date on new trends in the antique field.

If you can only buy one magazine about antiques and art, this is the one! They are good to collect themselves, as reference guides as well.

Informative, good format

Many beautiful pictures. Interesting and informative articles. Updates you on the latest trends in antiques. The ads alone are worth the price. Letters to the editor are always a kick to read through. The biographic reviews on artists and collectors give one insight into them that you would never otherwise have an opportunity to learn. Dates, places and times gives for openings, new galleries, etc. A good magazine for both the beginner and the connoisseur.
