Reviews For Aperture Magazine

HIGHEST STANDARD of the ART

I have found APERTURE magazine to be one of the finest, if not the finest, Art Photography publications in existence, over the last fifteen years. The magazine has been published longer, but; I first became aware of it, as a student at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design.

This quarterly is presented by people who have a serious interest in the Fine Art of Photography: The APERTURE Foundation, which is a non-profit Art Photography organization, situated in New York. The inside-cover, masthead page of the Winter, 1992 copy I hold in my hands, discloses: "Minor White, Editor (1952-1971)." Minor White, now deceased, had a keen interest in taking the time to perfect his own work, and through the leadership of APERTURE, to encourage, to inspire others to do the same. You can be sure that the desire to inspire excellence, through example, is very strong, in the APERTURE FOUNDATION, today.

A visit to the "Manufacturers' Page will give more insight into their ongoing quality, as well as other APERTURE Foundation interests.

APERTURE is NOT a "How To...", Tips and Tricks of...", Basics of Pet Photos", or "Photographic Gadgets for the New Millennium", magazine. Other publications fill these niches, some admirably so. To say that APERTURE is a magazine, comparable to other generally available Photography periodicals, is obscene. Each issue is put together, in physical ways, that SURPASS the standards that are applied to many soft cover Art BOOKS:

* The pages are printed on premium, HEAVY coated stock.
* Covers are quality stock, with the weight and stiffness of index, or better paper.
* The printing quality exceeds most BOOKS, and; rivals many of the rest.

What would be the point of all this?

KISS-OK:
EDITORIAL CONTENT; each issue presents a limited selection of artists, in as fine a manner as can be done, with text.

YES, APERTURE WOULD MAKE A GREAT ADDITION, AS A GIFT TO YOURSELF, OR ANYONE WHO IS A SERIOUS STUDENT (in the best meaning of the word) OF PHOTOGRAPHY!!!
