Reviews For Archaeology Magazine

Works for this armchair Indiana Jones

Is this a good magazine for the serious, scholarly archaeological professional? I have no idea. I'm just someone who is fascinated, sometimes obsessed, by sleuthing into the past, but who will probably never come closer to a dig than the pages of this magazine.

Thanks to Archaeology, my amateur longings are satisfied with reliable information relayed in an accessible format. Archaeology is sometimes fun, always inquisitive, but never fluffy. I read the entire issue in one sitting and always walk away a little wiser, with a few more opinions. Unlike television documentaries, I feel confident that anything I learn in Archaeology has been reliably researched with controversies noted.

Everyone mentions the gorgeous photos. As I walk away from my mailbox, looking at the cover, I find myself anticipating the time when I can sit down with the issue. The impact of the beautiful covers is always continued through the magazine, every article accompanied by lush photography.

Do you wonder about where you came from out of the past? By BCox26

As I get older I ponder where all things come from and have started reading about our past. Archaeology is THE magazine for digging into the mysteries of human evolution. All the compelling contexts it has about fossils and how it makes sense of all the advances of the past 50 years. I subscribe to this magazine and I recommend this magazine for the breath taking information it provides me every month. I look forward to each and every subscription and I would recommend it to anyone. Cons: There are none in my opinion!

Who Are We?

Who are we? To know more about ourselves we have to look into the past. If you can't travel the globe to explore and see some of the most spectacular sights from the past for yourself, then travel in comfort with the latest copy of Archaeology.
It's armchair adventure at its best. Curl up in your favorite corner, get comfortable and let your imagination take you back through time as history unfolds before you.
Then take the time to think for yourself and create moments of adventure as you learn the facts as we know them today. Allow yourself to think through the civilizations which made us what we are today.

The only magazine I read cover to cover, and don't ever throw away

I love this magazine. I started subscribing to Archaeology back in college, when money was very tight and even eating out was a huge luxury. I still have all my old issues from college. Ah! To be 20 again! But it's nice to see that the quality of this magazine has never wavered.

It must be a delight to work there... can you imagine working for a magazine where you report on real subject matter, rather than the latest Octuplets, Quintuplets, or whatever drivel passes for news nowadays?

This magazine is a breath of fresh air, and I'm so happy when I get my hands on each subsequent issue.

Thank you for putting out something that I look forward to reading every single time.

Highly Recommended.

Great magazine

I ordered this magazine subscription as a birthday present for my father. He is an armchair archaeologist and has thoroughly enjoyed reading this magazine. It has great world coverage of different events without being so academic as to bore the lay reader. The articles are thorough and interesting. I can't say that archaeology has interested me in the past, but I find myself looking forward to each magazine and read it cover to cover. I definitely recommend this magazine.

Great read for the Indiana Jones-type

I've loved this magazine for years. One could say that it's become more "glossy" over time--more for the general reader than a specialist. Which is perfect. No one will mistake it for a trade publication, but the fact is it gives fantastic, broad coverage to the entire world, including fascinating articles I would never have heard about because they are outside my main area of study. The amount of info on a story is perfect, and each article makes it easy to track down further info when you want it. Highly recommended.

Ahhhh ... my favorite magazine

I'm not an archaeologist. If I was born redundantly wealthy I think that I might have been one.

Archaeology is my "stop everything and read it on the day it arrives" magazine. I've been a subscriber for years. I read EVERY article. As a reader of archaeology and paleontology tomes, this magazine is the adjunct to my selections of books to read. My wife and I have planned vacations around Archaeology's articles. I've detoured business trips to take in a visit to several article sites.

During a cross country moving event 7 years ago, I let the subscription expire for lack of new address. Someone from Archaeology, not a telemarketer for sure, called me and said that I had been such a long term customer that they really wanted to know why I didn't renew ... was it something about the magazine quality? The voice on the other end was just so dang disappointed as she pleaded for feedback that it was stunning enough for me to remember 7 years later. The magazine must be read by a small but dedicated subscriber base and I think the magazine staff themselves makes the calls.

My only complaint is that it only prints every 2 months. If archaeology is among your interests, you would entertain your fancies with a subscription.

One of my favorite magazines

"Archaeology" is one of my favorite magazines; for several years it has kept me up to date on new finds (and revisions of the accepted learning on old finds) in straight forward and easily understood language. One of the great strengths of the articles is the short histories that put the current article into its cultural and scientific framework; it's then easy to do further research, either in the past issues or in suggested additional reading.

The magazine started an outstanding, award winning blog, in June 2008. It offers access to the current edition and to all of the past posts, an wonderful source of additional information on a subject that captures your fancy.

There is information on recent museum exhibits, new finds from the field, and technological innovation. Bloggers include the Archaeological Institute of America's (AIA) online editorial director, experts from around the world, and others working in the field. Readers are encouraged to comment, and some very interesting threads have developed over the past two years.

The magazine, and its associated blog, make great reading for anyone interested in archaeology.

Wonderful Historical/Archeological Magazine!

Overall, a great product that is scholarly as well as entertaining. This magazine is so far the best subscription on the subject of Archeology I have purchased, and is a wonderful addition to any archeologist's or historian's collection.

High on great content, low on ads!!

I look forward to receiving this magazine every few months and I read it cover to cover the same day I get it. It's a truly fascinating magazine with amazing photography. Definitely my favorite thing to read in the world!!
